Chama NM to Navajo Dam NM
7-1-14
Day 41
After yesterday’s mostly uphill day todays run was mostly downhill. Still we had the wind pushing us back.
The air is much drier now with very low humidly. Add a stiff
hot breeze along with high 90’s and your always thirsty. First you sip the water then the sip gets
longer until you have to force yourself to put it down.
Water became a crisis for Ken at about mile 70 and he held
up an empty water bottle to a passing truck.
That truck quickly pulled over and the driver walked out with two liter
bottles of ice cold water. When it is hot and you are thirsty desperation sets
in fast.
Remember if you’re in a jam the best vehicle to flag down is
an RV. They are a rolling convenience store. You could end up with a snack too.
Our day ended at an oasis in the desert The Navajo Dam on
the San Juan River. Here we booked a cabin at a fishing lodge. This place is all about fishing. They boast the best trout fishing in the
world here.
The first 5 miles of the river after the dam is “catch and
release” and is said to have 20,000 brown and rainbow trout per mile!! The fish are everywhere. Further down river
the limit is 5 per day but most still catch and release.
We stopped to ask a fisherman how the fishing was. Watch the video and see his reply. At the lodge we were told this is not as
uncommon a catch as you may think. I
guess if this is the #1 spot you catch a bunch of fish.
We are again having to divert off our planned route due to
hotel accommodations. Tomorrow we will head north to Durango Colorado and then
west to Cortez Colorado on the same road we traversed in 2008 on Wild West Tour
I.
