Day 34
In the wee hours of the morning we could hear thunder and woke to rain. This part of the country has been in a severe drought until we arrived. Lucky for us the rain stopped by 7:30 am and we were off.
Not long into the day the crew spotted a group of cyclist
pulled off the road. They were part of a supported charity ride for affordable
housing. They started their southern
cross -country route in Florida a day before we left Connecticut.
Their route and ours join in a few key places and that is
how we ran into this cheery group of cyclist. The riders were all in their
mid-twenties and most on their first big ride. They had a support van and
trailer to carry all the gear, take care of repairs and offer assistance to the
group. Midway through the day the van supplies the riders with a lunch break
and liquids. Not a bad way to travel.
Although they have to rely on churches and other donated sleeping arrangements.
A couple of the riders attempted to pick
up Kens loaded bike and were shocked with the weight. They ride empty except
for a camelback for water.
We entered the Texas panhandle at the 100th
Meridian line and started a gradual climb into the higher elevations. Soon
Rockies will loom on the horizon once we enter New Mexico. The landscape of
flat grasslands all the way to the horizon makes the sky look huge. In
Connecticut you would have to be in a boat on the ocean to see as far. But for some reason the sky does not look as
big.
Texas and Oklahoma are long states to traverse but by the
end of tomorrow they will be conquered.
