Day 16
6-5-14
Cookeville TN to Gordonsville TN
Ok you win some and you lose some, and today we lost. I am not even sure if we made more than 10
miles forward progress in the 53 miles we traveled. How is that you ask? Well let me tell you the sad story.
Yesterday we had to leave the route to find a place to sleep
so we started the day about 15 miles off course. When we left in the morning we could see that
there was a possibility that some nasty T-Boomers could be in our path.
We left under heavy cloud cover for our planned 78 mile run
to Murfreesboro TN. The heavy clouds
soon turned into a light rain then the sky opened up. We grabbed shelter under a carport with a
rather lanky looking dog and a broken down mower as the rain came down.
The radar app on our phone said “sit tight boys” as it
displayed a green, yellow and red blobs moving over us.
After standing under the carport for nearly an hour the homeowner
drove up. We really did not have to explain why we were there, it was
obvious. He told us we could stay as
long as needed and his dogs name was Dozer. So Dozer and the crew waited out
the passing cell of bad weather together.
When the rain stopped we hit the road and pushed forward.
Again the rain started and now a humongous blob of yellow and red storm cells
was between us and our planned destination.
This part of the storm was not to be taken lightly. Lighting, heavy rain and flooding was right in
front of us.
It was demoralizing but we had no choice but to double back
and find the nearest place to stay. Again we had to leave our planned route in
an unfavorable direction.
Hopefully the storms will pass and we can make forward
progress tomorrow.
