Day 29
Pleasant TX to Paris TX
It was another easily low mileage day for the cross country
crew with very little climbing. To be
honest with everyone it was rather a dull riding day. Not much to look at or
people to interact with.
We did have a few dogs chase us to keep things a little exciting
but overall the scenery was bland. The trees are slowly giving way to a more
desert like terrain. There are plenty of
oil rigs now. The once unique sighting has become common place.
Another lucky thing for us is the heat has not been turned
up too much on us yet. Cycling is high temperatures can slow you down and right
now we do not need that as we want to make up for some lost time.
One thing we have noticed since we crossed the Mississippi all
the rivers are a deep rusty mud color. This is caused by the red soil and clay
bottom. Don’t expect to see a crystal clear
Vermont type stream in this part of the country. They all look like rapidly flowing mudslides.
They are not appealing looking to us but to the locals those mud-flows are
catfish heaven.
Our route took us through some poor areas today and when
riding through I thought how lucky I am to be doing what I am doing. But then
just because they appear to have less than I do does not mean they enjoy life
less. Do people with more money and things have it better than me or even these
people After thinking it over my answer is no.
There are plenty of mega rich people that are miserable and don’t enjoy
life. They are not out here on the bike
riding across the country. It is not
money that makes life good. It is what you do to make life good no matter what
you have.
I guess we are not only the people out here with dog
issues. Here is a link to a page from
WFSB Connecticut Channel 3 about dogs on The Natchez Trace Parkway we just left
a few days ago.
We have more miles planned for Thursday and hopefully can get closer to normal our schedule. But again the location of sleep spots will determine our daily mileage.
