Day 23
French Camp MS to Madison MS
The sun was shining bright without a chance of rain and
there was almost no wind to deal with. Wind can be as big a factor as hills if
it is blowing in your face.
Sadly it was our last day on the Natchez Trace Parkway. A
cycling road we did not want not leave. Halfway through the day we decided to
set up a couple cameras for a group video.
Ken wanted a little higher perch for his camera so he ventured off the
roadway. Little did he know the area was infested with an ant the locals call “piss
ants”. Within seconds he was covered with hundreds of these nasty biting
creatures……….. Check out the video of the attack. A video is worth 1000 words.
Later down the Trace we came upon a swamp filled with the
Natchez Bald Cyprus trees. An absolutely
beautiful place of neon green vegetation floating on the water. We spent about
15 minutes looking at the trees emerging from the thick green moss.
We reached our day’s destination Madison Mississippi early and
went for dinner. We are always hungry burning calories up on the bikes. Just three bottomless pits you toss food into
and watch it disappear.
A couple of the
locals sat next to us and struck up a conversation. Just as everyone else we
have met in this fine country these guys they were just plain old “good people”.
Before we left Cliff gave us his cell phone number and told us if we have
problems within 300 miles call and he will show up with his pick-up truck. Both of the guys were computer people. I wish they would have offered help with this
blog and I would have accepted. I hope
to hear from them during the trip.
The terrain has flattened as we drifted west. For the next few hundred miles it will be
easier unless we hit the winds.
