Day 13
6-2-14
Natural Bridges State Park KY to Mt Vernon, KY
Our route follows the west
side of the Appalachian Mountains from start to
finish. That is why even on day 13 we
are still battling the hills. On our last two crossing we were in the level terrain
of the Great Plains by the 8th day.
The climbs in the Appalachian’s are
not terribly long or high in elevation but they are steep and greeting
you around every turn in the road. Steep climbs can really can take their toll
on a cyclist lugging a 70 pound bike.
As we have been moving in a
southerly direction we have noticed the humidity has started to rise along with
the temperature. It is not bad when you are rolling but stop and you start to
melt like an ice cube.
When Joe stopped at the top of the
hill he picked up a hitchhiker on his helmet.
In the past few days we have been ambushed by more dogs than
in the past 10 years back at home. In
West Virginia and Kentucky it seems like 90% of the dogs are on a short leash
tied to some dilapidated dog house. The other 10% are one the prowl for cyclist
from Connecticut.
