Day 52

Mesquite NV to Las Vegas NV

7-11-14

Day 52

The team was up early and on the road by 7am. We knew there were over 100 miles to cover and it would be hot in the afternoon. The wind also seem to come on late in the afternoon.  Anything we can do to avoid that torture is a good thing.

From Mesquite to Las Vegas there is only one road, the interstate highway.  In Connecticut it is illegal to ride a bicycle on the highway but on this particular section of road in Nevada it is not.
The shoulder was wide and for an interstate traffic was not terrible. We stayed on the interstate for almost 40 miles and made good time on the smooth surface.

We stopped at the top of one hill and could see Las Vegas and the end of the tour just ahead.
Ken’s mom gave us a gift card to be used for a celebratory dinner after the ride was over. She has done this on the last two tours. Nothing better than that for three hungry cyclist. Thank you, again.

Well this year we had the surprise of surprises when another cross country cyclist we only met briefly on the first Wild West Tour sent us another dinner via PayPal.  We crossed paths with Hugo Mackowitz while we were traversing Arizona in 2008. Hugo was riding solo from California to Florida.

Good old Hugo is from Austria and claimed he crossed the country eating bananas and sour cream. We admire cyclist who do not know the country just fly here and jump on a bike solo and cross the country.

They do not even know what a Walmart is.  Think about that for a second. Everything is new and you alone on a bike with a paper map.Tough dudes and Hugo was one of them ….and also a good guy. THANKS HUGO.

We had to ride our bikes on part of the Vegas Strip before we put them down. We pulled onto Fremont Street which is the “old” strip and met a few different characters.

We traveled 4000 miles in 50 days of cycling and climbed over 200,000 feet in the process. Body and soul feel good.

107 Miles

Weather 102 degrees Sun

3710 Feet of Climbing
